Photochemical Speciation of Oxygen Isotopes in the Solar Nebula

چکیده
We have performed time-dependent photochemical calculations of CO selfshielding in the surface region of a turbulent nebula, and demonstrated that substantial mass-independent fractionation in bulk oxygen isotopes in the nebula was possible on timescales of 10 years. CO photodissociation in the presence of abundant H2 yields δvalues for nebular H2O with δO/δO near 1.0, consistent with measurements in CaAl-rich inclusions. This mechanism provides a self-consistent explanation for the oxygen isotope values of nebular water inferred from secondary minerals in unequilibrated chondrites, and places constraints on the far-ultraviolet radiation in the solar nebula environment and the strength of turbulent vertical mixing in the nebula.

Evolution of the Solar Nebula. VIII. Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Short-Lived Radioisotopes and Stable Oxygen Isotopes
Isotopic abundances of short-lived radionuclides such as Al provide the most precise chronometers of events in the early solar system, provided that they were initially homogeneously distributed. On the other hand, the abundances of the three stable isotopes of oxygen in primitive meteorites show a mass-independent fractionation that survived homogenization in the solar nebula. As as result of ...
متن کاملNon-mass Dependent Oxygen Isotopic Fractionation of Refractory Oxide Dust Produced by a Chemical Process
Introduction: A wide range of oxygen isotopic compositions have been observed in early solar system objects reflecting the existence of heterogeneity in the solar nebula from sub-millimeter to the scale of planetary dimensions. Along with the spread in composition, the striking feature is the departure from the normal fractionation line (represented by a slope 1⁄2 line in a 3-isotope plot of ox...
متن کاملA short timescale for changing oxygen fugacity in the solar nebula revealed by high-resolution Al–Mg dating of CAI rims
Most rocky objects in the solar system, including the primitive chondrites and the terrestrial planets themselves, formed at oxygen fugacities ( fO2) near that of the Iron–Wüstite (IW) fO2 buffer. Conversely, the most ancient rocky objects of the solar system, the calcium aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs), formed at fO2 values 5 orders of magnitude lower than the IW buffer in an environment more ...
متن کاملCreation and Distribution of Cais in the Protoplanetary Nebula
Ca-Al rich refractory mineral inclusions (CAIs) found at 1-10% mass fraction in primitive chondrites appear to be several million years older than the dominant (chondrule) components in the same parent bodies. A prevalent concern is that it is difficult to retain CAIs for this long against gas-drag-induced radial drift into the sun. We assess a hot inner (turbulent) nebula context for CAI forma...
متن کاملOxygen Isotopes in Chondritic Interplanetary
Introduction: Planetary objects have preserved various amounts of oxygen derived from isotopically distinct reservoirs reflecting their origins and diverse physico-chemical histories [1]. An O-rich component is preserved in high temperature phases, such as refractory inclusions (CAIs) and some chondrules, whereas meteorite matrices are enriched in a relatively O-poor component [2]. The origin o...
